Gone With The Wind

Gone With The Wind: My Movie Analysis

The War and Its Portrayal

What I observed in the movie Gone With The Wind is that there is a great war between the Northern and Southern states. The war was called the American Civil War where they were fighting over the issues of slavery, state rights and economic differences.

I think the filmmakers made the story a bit unrealistic due to some of the conversations and conflicts that were made in the film but I think it still shows the truths of how people acted. I believe that in this film it showed the truths of how Southern society was living a lavish and wealthy lifestyle before the war arose. It revealed the way “whites” were living compared to the black servants that were barely seen throughout the film. I do think the movie totally ignored how terrible slavery was at the time, because it hardly showed how black's were being treated during that time.

Scarlett's Character and Transformation

The main character Scarlett played by Viven Leigh was in love with Wilkes. In the beginning of the movie she tries to win him back even though he was marrying his cousin Melaine. This made her jealous and to impulsively marry Meaine's brother, who was quickly killed in the war.

Scarlett evolved amidst the tumult of war by being independent. Before the war started she depended on her servants at home mainly Mammy and Prissy who did almost everything for her. As war arose she learned quickly that she had to do things on her own.

In wartime I believe that it gave women a chance to shed their Southern Belle weakness and prove themselves more independent and resilient because it showed them how to fend for themselves rather than rely on others. It has happened in other wars like World War I and II where women shared their support by managing male jobs. Many became spies, nurses and organizers for war efforts.

Rhett Butler's Controversial Choices

Rhett Butler portrayed by Clark Gable was a confident man who did not follow the rules of Southern society where he was often seen as an outsider. During the war instead of choosing to fight he decided to make money instead, which many judged him for.

I think he was right to profit from the war rather than dedicate himself to it but it can be seen as controversial. He ends up making money from the war but he is also one less soldier on the battlefield which could have been crucial to their war efforts.

I think that his situation would not be unusual since many people find ways to profit from the horrors of war like being suppliers of weapons, food, clothing, and medical supplies. In today's society I don't think it would be unusual at all that people would make millions out of these supplies. Many people in today's society find many ways to profit by starting businesses, investing in stocks, being a social media influencer, and so much more.
